Dacoits make Edhi hostage, loot millions in cash, gold

KARACHI: World-renowned social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi was held at gunpoint on Sunday and deprived of cash and valuables estimated to be worth millions of rupees.
At least eight armed dacoits stormed the Edhi Welfare Centre in the Mithadar area on Sunday, media reports said. According to initial reports, Abdul Sattar Edhi, a prominent philanthropist and social worker. was held hostage by the armed men who raided the centre, taking away millions of rupees. Reportedly, Edhi was asleep when the dacoits attacked the welfare centre.
Edhi along with the centre staff was held hostage while the gunmen robbed the centre. The robbery lasted half an hour.The dacoits forcefully grabbed cupboard keys from Abdul Sattar Edhi and took away Rs 10 million in cash, 5 kilogrammes of gold and other valuable items.
While talking to media, Edhi said the dacoits woke him up and rushed straight to the cupboard where the money and gold was kept. He expressed his grief over the dacoity, saying that he has been deprived of some valuables that belonged to other people.
Unfortunately, there were no security guards present in the welfare centre at the time of the incident and neither were there any CCTV cameras. The robbery case has been registered at the Mithadar Police Station.
