ISLAMABAD, December 03 (Online): The 10th session of the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) General Assembly (GA) concluded here on Friday with an understanding of enhanced cooperation for the development of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) between the members.

Some 117 delegates of 28 members countries attended the APT General Assembly (GA) meeting which was chaired by the President of APT Major General ( r) Shahzada Alam Malik. The newly elected vice Presidents Mr Charles S Punaha and Mr Tin Hiwe and the executive director of APT, Mr Amarendra Narayan were also present during the meeting. The meeting also discussed the report of the 10th session of the APT in deal and finally adopted it in the last session.

In addition to other issues, the report also included the unanimously accepted proposal of Pakistan for rehabilitation of telecommunication services during a natural disaster. Moreover, Pakistan stressed upon the importance of the development of telecommunication and ICT infrastructure on a regional and sub regional basis, Pakistan has also increased financial contribution for the budget of APT.

Speaking at the concluding session, the President APT Maj Gen ( R) Shahzada Alam Malik said that APT has chalked out an effective programme of activities which would enhance telecom efficacy of the member countries. He also thanked the delegates for their active participation in the GA meeting.

Executive Director APT said that this time GA of APT has significance in view of issues concerning ICT for the disaster management. He said that in this hour of trail, the people and government of Pakistan have shown practice and courage, which is commendable. He appreciated efforts of PTA and the Government for organizing the APT conference in Islamabad. The Vice Presidents also praised the arrangements of the meeting and congenial atmosphere for deliberations.

It may be mentioned that the APT member countries expressed their heartiest condolences and solidarity with the victims of the recent earthquake. The meeting also announced that the next APT GA meeting would be held in Malaysia in 2008. The 29th Session of the Management Committee (MC) of APT would start from December 5 here at Islamabad.
