SRINAGAR: Clashes overnight between Indian government forces and suspected Islamic militants who oppose India`s rule in disputed Kashmir left at least nine people dead, police and army officials said on Monday.
Indian forces shot and killed three suspected militants in a clash in the Jammu portion of India`s Jammu-Kashmir state, police said on Monday.
Five other suspected militants and a soldier were killed in two separate clashes in the Kashmir part of the state, the army said.
All of the militants were believed to belong to groups fighting for Kashmir`s independence from predominantly Hindu India or the territory`s merger with Muslim Pakistan, officials said.
