North Waziristan accord

The recent accord, which took place between the government authorities and the tribal militants is indeed, to be welcomed by all. According to the details of the accord; the government seems to have given far more than the militants. The biggest concession to the tribal militants, is regarding the foreigners in their ranks. These foreign militants, against whom, ostensibly, the whole series of operations were started in the tribal areas, seem to have been offered, the sweetest, of the deals. They have been told, either to leave the country, or if they cannot, they should live as peaceful citizens, according to the law of the land.

The most annoying question is why this time the tested institution of tribal jirgas, which apparently achieved this accord, was not employed earlier. A lot of senseless violence, and precious lives on both sides, could have been prevented.

The Americans are perhaps, raising their eyebrows, especially about the clause concerning the foreigners. Our authorities, would, however, be well advised to resist American pressure; and continue their efforts to diffuse and settle, the very perilous situation prevailing in our tribal areas. These efforts of our authorities, should of course be in conformity, with our tribal and cultural traditions.
