ISLAMABAD: National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister Lt General (retd) Mehmud Ali Durrani has had his first formal interaction with a large group of Nato representatives based in Islamabad Thursday when he briefed them about the way Pakistan is tackling militancy, especially in the Fata region.
Durrani, formerly Pakistan’s Ambassador to Washington, has been recently appointed as national security advisor by the new government. It was Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who introduced Durrani to the group of 19 Nato representatives and the High Commissioner of Australia, a country which also has presence in Afghanistan. Qureshi left after this and it was Durrani who briefed the diplomats for an hour with the help of maps.
Amongst those who also attended the briefing from the Foreign Office were additional secretaries for Afghanistan and Americas, Khalid Khattack and Akber Zeb. Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq was also present. There was no statement after this special briefing.
The Foreign Office did well to bring in the national security advisor for this long overdue briefing, at a time when different voices are being heard from NATO countries over how Pakistan proposes to deal with militancy for which it is paying a very heavy price.
