On 20 September, 2008, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has stated in his Maiden Speech to Joint Parliamentary session that no country would be allowed to violate territorial integrity of Pakistan in the name of curbing terrorism. But just after few hours terrorists have responded to the government will and shattered the capital peace through hitting a Five Star Hotel “Marriott”. In this attack at least 60 people were killed and over 300 injured when an explosives laden truck along with a small vehicle rammed into the gate and reached to the lobby of the hotel. It was the third attempt of targeting this hotel.
Sources reported that 1000 kilograms of explosive material was used in the deadly explosion. On March 10 and September 6, 2008 similar types of suicidal blasts were carried out against FIA building Lahore and Police Check Post located at Kohat Road, Peshawar. The only difference of selection of target in this case was that , in Lahore and Peshawar security forces were marked as target but here in Islamabad innocent people were came under attack. But one aspect is quite visible from December, 2007 to till to date that some hidden hands are desperately involve in sabotaging the peace and democratic process of Pakistan. Political and Military leadership of Pakistan has condemned this brutality of anti state elements and categorically said that war against terrorism will remain continue on top of the agenda till elimination of last activist from he country.
It is notable here that more than 1200 persons were killed in suicidal and other attacks in 2008. Anyhow government should try to handle this issue maturely and militants be dealt through iron hands. President while addressing UNO should elaborate Pakistan efforts in relation to war on terrorism and must highlight that state terrorism in all over the world particularly in South Asia requires to be stopped. Pakistan should also be provided sophisticated equipments including helicopters to fight terrorism.
The current blast of Islamabad will also be seen on the back drop of prevailing tensions between Islamabad and Washington. On September 19, 2008 Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani called on President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Pervez Kayani was also present at the meeting. Reportedly PM, the president and Army Chief decided that the US military invasions into Pakistani territory will not be tolerated. It was unanimously agreed that the integrity and sovereignty of the country will be strongly defended in the war against terrorism. It is a second incident of Islamabad when it has been noticed that FBI agents were found present in the hotel, rescued and taken to the US embassy. Earlier in a blast of Italian Hotel some FBI persons were also found there too. Thus presences of FBI agents at both the occasions do create doubt in the minds and has to be taken care by our intelligence set up.
On September 17, 2008 US unmanned drone missile strike killed at least six people just after few hours of top US military officer’s statement of respecting Pakistan sovereignty and ensuring our leaders that no further violation will be made in FATA. Nato Commander already cleared his position that they will not be party to any action of US against Pakistan. The current set back to the US economy will definitely an eye opener to the general masses. The continuity of war in Afghanistan and Iraq further deteriorate the economy of America and her other allies.
On September 15 , 2008 General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani while visiting Siachen Area stated that it was the manifestation of Pakistan Army‘s resolve that no odds could deter it from pursuing its obligations towards national defence. Earlier too after the aggression of American Helicopters he took a very bold stance and Mullen has also been made clear that Pakistan Forces will defend her boundaries with their full strength. In a rare public statement last week, Kayani said Pakistan`s sovereignty would be defended "at all cost." Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told to The Associated Press that to prevent any similar raids. "The orders are clear," He stated in an interview. "In case it happens again in this form, that there is a very significant detection, which is very definite, no ambiguities, across the border, on ground or in the air to open fire." He further stressed that Pakistani officials had to consider public opinion, which is skeptical of American goals in the region and harbors sympathy for rebels fighting in the name of Islam. Moreover army is also an extension of the public and therefore has to satisfy the public by matching its words with the actions on ground.
In fact American in collaboration with India is using pressure tactics against Pakistan. India recently has placed her fighter air craft in Kashmir and involved Israel to counter the security situation. Israel’s Army chief, Major General Avi Mizrahi secretly visited Kashmir last week. US leadership attitude towards India and Pakistan is entirely different. She is not willing to provide that equipments which could be helpful in elimination of militants. Whereas, she has allowed Israel to sale out Phalcons Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems , Green Pine radars, The TAR-21 Travor rifle and other latest technology including nuclear technology to India .These all equipments would only be used against China , India , for the hunting of innocent Kashmiris.
Recently, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard Boucher said that ISI (Pakistani Intelligence Agency) needs reforms but failed to pint out any substantial aspect of restructuring in ISI by saying, “It has to be done,” Asked if he had seen signs of reform, he told a news agency: “No, I don’t have anything in particular I would point to right now.” The statement of Boucher is amount to interfering in other state’s affairs. Most probably CIA dictated him to give such type of statement with a view to pressurize ISI and to create a rift between government and Armed Forces.
The blasts of Marriott Hotel might also be planned to prove that Pakistan and Afghanistan to be taken on equal level in relation to war on terror and be considered as totally de-stable and fail countries at world level. The troika of anti Pakistan states ( US, Israel & India ) is on their joint venture because they exactly came to know that present government and Army Chief will never compromise on national sovereignty and would not oblige the United States in its demand to allow military operations inside Pakistani territory and likely to retaliate with full might against any further aggression.
