DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Ten persons, including four policemen, were killed and 27 others injured in two bomb blasts near the Polytechnic College here on Sunday. Sources said an explosive device, planted by miscreants near the main gate of the Polytechnic College, went off at 7:07 pm, injuring four persons.

Eyewitnesses said soon after the blast, police personnel and people rushed to the spot. As a large number of policemen and people gathered at the site, a 16-year-old suicide bomber forced his entry into the crowd and blew himself up, killing 10 persons, including four cops, and injuring 21 others.

The policemen killed in the explosion were identified as Ijaz Hussain, Rashid, Tariq and Shafiq. Also killed were passersby Tahir Saleem and Imran. Names of the other dead could not be ascertained.

Seven policemen, including Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kifayatullah Khan, Allah Nawaz, Ismail and Shafiq of the Police Special Branch were wounded in the blast and were being provided treatment. One of the injured cops was identified as Rashid.

Two more persons were injured when unidentified armed men opened fire on an Edhi Ambulance, which was returning after transporting the body of Constable Rashid to Mariali area. One wounded person was identified as Aslam while the identity of the other could not be established.

Eyewitnesses said the suicide bomb blast was so severe that pieces of human flesh and body parts scattered over a large area. Hospital sources said some of the wounded persons, who were in critical condition, were later shifted to Peshawar.

Meanwhile, security was beefed up in and around the city to avert more terrorist attacks. Dera Ismail Khan has been hit by a series of bomb explosions and suicide bombings in the recent months. Rockets have also been fired at the city. It has also suffered from sectarian strife and its economy has been badly affected.

End.
