PESHAWAR: Residents continued to flee South Waziristan on Sunday amid an ongoing military operation against the Taliban in the region.

Nearly 12,700 displaced families have already been registered in Tank and DI Khan. NWFP Relief Commissioner Shakeel Qadar Khan told reporters that 94,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from South Waziristan had been registered in five registration centres set up in DI Khan and Tank districts.

He said that 18,000 smart cards had been issued to the IDPs, through which they could withdraw Rs 5,000 every month. The city administration has augmented security in DI Khan and Tank and extra measures have been taken to ensure peace there. District Headquarters hospitals in DI Khan and Tank have also been directed to be ready in case of an emergency.

End.
