ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday met for the third time in one week and discussed the security situation in the country amid the fresh wave of terrorist attacks.
Zardari and Gilani, who also met on Friday and Tuesday, decided to establish a counter-terrorism wing in the Information Ministry. The wing will coordinate with the print and electronic media.
According to sources, it was decided during the meeting that the premier would convene a meeting of all the four chief ministers today (Friday) to formulate a new security plan in the wake of fresh terrorism attacks.
They said the president and the prime minister also discussed the ongoing military operation in South Waziristan and the relief operation for the internally displaced persons. “They also discussed the proposed bill in the Congress that envisages imposing new restrictions on Pakistan and decided to take up this issue with the United States,” they added.
The sources said the meeting decided that Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi would be asked to discuss this issue with the US administration. Restructuring of the Information Ministry was another main agenda item of the meeting. “The president also discussed with the premier his meeting with PML-N Nawaz Sharif on Monday. Gilani, who had advised the president to meet Nawaz Sharif, will also attend it,” the sources said. They said the president would also meet other political leaders, including PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, to discuss the security situation. The visit of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who will also address the joint sitting of parliament, was also discussed.
