KABUL: Afghan troops and Nato war jets pounded militants during a fierce battle in Afghanistan, killing 17 militants, the Afghan defence ministry said on Sunday.The fighting erupted after the militants fired mortars at an Afghan Army position in the Zabul province, the ministry said in a statement.
“During the battle, which was backed by international forces’ air support and lasted for one hour, 17 militants were killed,” the statement said, adding that another militant, wounded in the fighting, was captured. Meanwhile, a British soldier has been killed in an explosion, the ministry said.
In the meantime, provincial police spokesman Ghafoor Khan said two private security guards, providing security to a supply convoy for the Nator forces, had been wounded and two fuel tankers set on fire near Jalalabad when militants attacked the convoy. He said other tankers were damaged along the highway. Also, the US forces killed a truck driver after two Marines were killed in a road accident in the Khazakai area.
