PESHAWAR: Afghan Taliban have set conditions for the release of a Norwegian journalist who was captured in eastern Afghanistan two days back, a spokesman for the Taliban said on Sunday.
“Mujahideen captured a foreigner on November 6, who describes his name as Powel and belongs to Norway, in an area under Taliban control in Kunar province. He came to Taliban area without permission, which is a violation. Now he is being grilled and if it is proved that he is a journalist, he will be released on two conditions,” Qari Dawat, a purported spokesman for Kunar Taliban, told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) by telephone.
About the conditions, he said that 12 Taliban prisoners should be freed and Norway must pull out its troops from Afghanistan. “If it is proved that Mr Powel is a spy and not a journalist, then his punishment would be different,” Qari Dawat went on to add. “It is the decision of our military shura in the area. And it is the domain of this shura to make decisions in such cases.”
