QUETTA: Pakistan People’s Party candidate Tahir Mehmood on Wednesday won the by-elections for PB-I Quetta-I with a thumping majority by bagging 6,357 votes against his rival Amanullah Shadezai’s 387 votes.

According to unofficial results, Tahir Mehmood got 6,357 votes while Jamaat-e-Islami (JI)’s Amanullah Shadezai secured 387 votes out of the total 6,818 votes. The seat had fallen vacant after the murder of Balochistan’s education minister Shafiq Ahmed Khan. He was Tahir’s elder brother.

Tahir had the backing of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), the PML-N, the Pashtoonkhawa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) and the JWP-Aali in the by-polls. The estimated turnout remained around 25 per cent. A total of 54 polling stations were set up with 117 polling booths. Due to the cold weather, no rush was seen at polling stations.

Heavy contingent of security personnel were deployed in different parts of the provincial metropolis to avert any untoward incident. Special deployment was also made in and outside the polling stations.

End.
