MADRID (AFP)-Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) said on Tuesday it was awaiting information from the British sports ministry on the abuse directed by Spanish fans against British driver Lewis Hamilton at the Montmelo circuit at the weekend.
Motorsport's governing body FIA had warned on Monday that Spain may even lose its Formula One Grands Prix this year at the Montmelo venue near Barcelona and Valencia following the incidents which marred a pre-season testing session.
British Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe said Monday he was going to write to the FIA and Spanish Minister for Sport Jaime Lissavetzky to express his concern, pointing out there had been other incidents of racist abuse of British sportsmen in Spain in recent years.
"We have still received nothing, neither a letter nor any other form of notification, on this subject," a CSD spokesman told AFP.
"When we receive something we will respond in terms which we consider appropriate," he continued.
"If it is a personal letter addressed to Mr. Lissavetzky, then there will be a personal response to the British minister."
The Spanish fans' behaviour was seen as a reaction to perceived favouritism by McLaren for Britain's Hamilton last season at the expense of Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who has since rejoined Renault.
On each occasion Hamilton left the pits, insults were thrown at him by a group of spectators, wearing black wigs with black make-up and T-shirts bearing the legend "Hamilton's Family" on the front and "Alonso No 1" on the back.
Two spectators were thrown out of the circuit over an incident which Hamilton described as saddening.
End.
