MOSCOW - Russians celebrated their country's win in the ice hockey World Cup final in Quebec on Sunday night with a 5-4 overtime win over the hosts Canada.

"Happy New Century!" exclaimed the front page of Russia's most popular sports daily "Sport Express"  - a reference to the fact that the country last won a world title in the 20th century, in 1993.

"The Curse Has Been Broken!" the paper went on, stressing that in rallying to dethrone Canada 5-4 in the championship game Russia had finally snapped a 15-year gold-medal drought.

"The World Is Yours!" blared the banner front-page headline of the Soviet Sport daily, punctuating its message with a photograph of star forward Ilya Kovalchuk jumping up and punching the air in victory.

End.
