GENEVA – The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised a global alert over the rising threat of chikungunya, warning that billions could be at risk if urgent action is not taken.
The mosquito-borne virus, known for causing high fever and severe joint pain, has rapidly expanded its reach. More than 5.6 billion people across 119 countries now live in areas vulnerable to the disease.
Europe has already recorded dozens of imported cases and multiple local transmissions, particularly in France and Italy. Meanwhile, South Asia, including Pakistan, has seen a surge in cases following seasonal mosquito outbreaks.
There is no specific treatment or globally available vaccine, though a few have recently been approved in limited markets. WHO stresses the need for coordinated efforts in vector control, awareness campaigns, and preventive health infrastructure.
Health experts caution that the world must act swiftly to prevent chikungunya from becoming the next global epidemic.
