Islamabad, Pakistan – At least six people were killed and nine others injured after a gas cylinder explosion ripped through a residential house in the federal capital, turning what was meant to be a moment of celebration into a scene of devastation, rescue officials confirmed on Sunday.
According to Rescue 1122 sources, the blast occurred in the early hours of the morning at a house located in Islamabad’s G-7 sector. The powerful explosion caused a partial collapse of the building, trapping several people under the rubble and damaging nearby houses, sending shockwaves across the neighbourhood.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene soon after receiving distress calls. Rescue teams launched an intensive operation, using heavy equipment and manual tools to pull victims from the debris. Officials said multiple members of the same family were among the deceased, while several of the injured sustained serious burn and trauma injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as residents poured into the streets following the blast. Neighbours said they heard a loud explosion followed by screams, prompting immediate efforts to assist those trapped inside before rescue teams arrived.
Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was caused by a gas cylinder leak, though authorities have stated that a detailed inquiry is underway to determine the exact cause and whether negligence or faulty equipment played a role. Police cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue work and ensure public safety, while gas and electricity supplies were temporarily suspended as a precaution.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over the unsafe use of gas cylinders in residential areas, particularly during gatherings and events. Officials urged citizens to follow safety guidelines and regularly inspect gas equipment to prevent similar disasters.
As Islamabad mourns the loss of lives, authorities have assured that support will be extended to the affected families and that accountability will be ensured once the investigation is completed.
