Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Pakistan has strongly criticized Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity, terming the move a “clear act of political aggression” and a serious violation of international law. The remarks were made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar while addressing an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), convened to discuss the implications of the controversial development.
Speaking at the high-level moot, Dar warned that Israel’s decision undermines the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Somalia, a member state of the United Nations with internationally recognised borders. He stressed that no unilateral recognition can alter established international boundaries and described the move as destabilising for the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region.
Dar emphasized that Pakistan views this recognition not as a routine diplomatic gesture but as a dangerous political precedent that could encourage separatist movements elsewhere and weaken the global framework governing state sovereignty. He reiterated Islamabad’s firm support for Somalia and called on the international community to reject any action that threatens regional peace and stability.
The foreign minister further noted that respect for territorial integrity is a core principle of the UN Charter, warning that selective application of international law erodes global trust and fuels conflict. He urged OIC member states to remain united and vocal against such actions, stressing that silence could embolden similar moves in other volatile regions.
OIC participants echoed Pakistan’s concerns, reaffirming collective support for Somalia’s unity and rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as illegal and provocative. Several speakers cautioned that legitimising breakaway regions without international consensus could open the door to prolonged instability and diplomatic chaos.
As tensions rise following Israel’s announcement, Pakistan has called for restraint, dialogue and strict adherence to international law. Dar concluded by urging global powers to prioritise peace over political manoeuvring and to avoid steps that could further polarise already fragile regions.
