NEW DELHI: In India, farmers protesting against new farm laws rejected the federal government's proposals and threatened to intensify their demonstrations by blocking main highways connecting nearby cities to national capital.
Addressing the media today (Wednesday), farmers unions' representatives announced that their protests would continue till Monday.
The farmers said new farm laws are detrimental to their interests and enacted to favour the big corporates.
On the other hand, senior leaders of Opposition parties, including Indian National Congress, Nationalist Congress Party , Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India-Marxists, met President Ram Nath Kovind and urged him to immediately withdraw the farm laws.
Later, briefing media, INC's lawmaker Rahul Gandhi said these laws should be withdrawn as they were passed in Parliament without consulting the farming community.
Today is the 17th consecutive day of the farmers' protest. As many as six rounds of talks between agitated farmers and the federal ministers have remained inconclusive.
