LONDON: In a major breakthrough, United Kingdom has become the first country in the world to approve tested Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for widespread use.

According to Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the approved vaccine provides up to 95% protection against the novel coronavirus.

In the first phase, UK has ordered around 40 million doses, enough to vaccinate 20 million people.

The government has assured that 800,000 doses will be made available soon to stop the spread of coronavirus.

This vaccine by Pfizer/BioNTech has been developed in the span of ten months only.

Previously, Russia and China approved coronavirus vaccines without waiting for the large scale results, a decision that health experts and scientists in some cases have said poses serious risks.

The developed mRNA vaccine uses a tiny fragment of genetic code from the virus in order to teach human body how to fight coronavirus and build immunity.

It is for the first time that this vaccine has been approved for human-use, although people have received them in clinical trials.
