Rawalpindi – The body of Colonel (retd) Ishaq Qazi was recovered on Thursday after his car was swept away by floodwaters in Rawalpindi amid intense monsoon rains. His 25-year-old daughter remains missing as rescue teams continue a frantic search in the area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning near the Soan River close to DHA Phase 5, when the vehicle attempted to cross a heavily flooded road and was caught in the powerful current. According to the Sihala police, the colonel tried to restart the stalled car but was overpowered by the rushing water, which dragged the vehicle into a deep storm drain.
Rescue 1122 teams later found Colonel Qazi’s body downstream, near the Soan River bridge. Parts of the car—including a door and the bonnet—were also recovered from submerged locations.
Search and rescue teams, including divers and civil volunteers, are continuing operations to locate the missing daughter, with authorities stating that efforts will continue until conclusive results are achieved.
The tragedy comes amid severe flooding across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, as the monsoon season intensifies. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has placed local agencies on high alert and issued public warnings against attempting to cross overflowing nullahs or flood-prone zones.
The district administration has also enforced Section 144, restricting movement near water channels to prevent further loss of life.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the deadly risks posed by urban flash floods and the urgent need for greater caution and disaster preparedness.
