LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has turned to his elder brother and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to help calm the escalating rift between Maryam Nawaz and the coalition partner PPP, as tensions threaten the fragile unity of the ruling alliance.
According to party insiders, the meeting took place at the Sharif family’s Jati Umra residence, where Shehbaz briefed Nawaz about growing discord with the PPP over governance issues, flood rehabilitation concerns, and water distribution disputes. The Prime Minister reportedly sought Nawaz’s intervention, urging him to convince Maryam to adopt a softer and more reconciliatory approach in her dealings with coalition allies.
The feud has intensified after Maryam’s outspoken remarks, which the PPP described as undermining the authority of the Council of Common Interests (CCI). While Maryam has stood firm, defending her statements as necessary for Punjab’s interests, the PPP leadership has accused her of creating unnecessary friction at a time when coalition stability is crucial.
Analysts note that such disputes weaken the government’s position and provide leverage to opposition parties. Sources suggest Nawaz has been asked to play the role of mediator, ensuring that political differences do not spiral into open confrontation.
While the official statement downplayed the friction, saying discussions also touched on Shehbaz’s upcoming foreign visits and the Kashmir issue, it is evident that coalition management remains at the heart of the government’s current political challenges.
Observers believe that Shehbaz Sharif is eager to see tensions with the PPP diffused before his visit to Malaysia, where he is expected to engage in key diplomatic and economic talks. Political unity at home, they argue, is vital to strengthen Pakistan’s position abroad.
