Karachi — Educational activities across Sindh, Pakistan, will come to a complete halt on January 17 as the provincial government announces a one-day closure of all public and private schools in observance of Shab-i-Meraj, a religious occasion of profound importance for Muslims.
An official notification confirmed that the closure will apply uniformly to educational institutions across the province, covering primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels. Both government-run and privately managed schools have been directed to suspend academic activities for the day to allow students, teachers, and staff to participate in religious observances.
Shab-i-Meraj commemorates the miraculous night journey and ascension of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The occasion is traditionally marked by special prayers, religious gatherings, and sermons highlighting the spiritual significance of faith, patience, and devotion. Across Sindh, mosques and religious centers are expected to hold dedicated programs late into the night.
Administrative Preparations and Academic Adjustments
Education department officials stated that schools have been advised to make necessary adjustments to lesson plans and schedules to accommodate the holiday without affecting academic continuity. Routine classes will resume following the observance, and no changes to examination timetables have been announced at this stage.
The provincial government regularly declares holidays for major religious events to ensure public participation and maintain social harmony. Parents and school administrations have welcomed the announcement, noting that early notification allows families to plan religious activities accordingly.
Wider Observance Across the Province
In addition to educational institutions, various public and private organizations are expected to observe the night with reduced operations, while law enforcement and civic authorities will remain on duty to manage gatherings and ensure public safety.
The closure highlights Sindh’s commitment to recognizing religious traditions while maintaining orderly academic and administrative planning across the province.
