Islamabad – A fresh weather system is set to bring snowfall and rain to Pakistan’s northern regions from tomorrow, with showers expected to extend to parts of Sindh and Balochistan from January 21, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Meteorological officials said a westerly wave entering the upper parts of the country will trigger rain and snowfall in northern and mountainous areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Well-known hill stations such as Murree, Galliyat, Hunza, Skardu and Neelum Valley are likely to experience moderate to heavy snowfall, potentially disrupting road traffic and daily life.
The PMD has warned that the cold spell may intensify in these regions, with temperatures dropping sharply, particularly during night-time and early morning hours. Authorities have advised residents and tourists to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel to high-altitude areas and stay updated with official advisories due to the risk of slippery roads and possible landslides.
From January 21 onwards, the weather system is expected to move southwards, bringing rain and thunderstorms to several districts of Sindh and Balochistan. Cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Quetta, Ziarat and coastal areas of Balochistan may receive intermittent showers, offering some relief from dry conditions but also raising concerns about urban flooding in low-lying areas.
Disaster management authorities have urged provincial administrations to remain on alert and ensure preparedness in case of any emergency. The expected rainfall is likely to benefit agriculture in certain regions, though officials stress the need for caution as sudden weather changes can affect transportation and routine activities.
Citizens have been advised to take necessary precautions, particularly in colder regions, and to follow weather updates closely as the system develops over the coming days.
