Bangkok – Thailand has categorically denied claims by US President Donald Trump that a ceasefire has been agreed with Cambodia, asserting that military operations along the long-disputed border will continue until the country’s sovereignty is fully secured. The renewed conflict has drawn international attention, highlighting the fragility of peace efforts in Southeast Asia and the complexities of regional diplomacy.
Trump had announced on social media that both Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to halt hostilities following renewed clashes earlier this month. He claimed that the leaders of both countries would return to a previously brokered ceasefire. However, Thai authorities have strongly disputed this, emphasizing that no formal agreement has been implemented on the ground. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stressed that the Thai military will maintain operations until all threats along the border are neutralized and civilians can live safely.
The fighting erupted along the 817-kilometre border region, reversing a period of relative calm established after a peace accord signed in Kuala Lumpur in October, which was witnessed by Trump and regional leaders. Both Thailand and Cambodia accuse each other of instigating the renewed clashes. Cambodia claims Thai fighter jets dropped multiple bombs on its territory just hours after Trump’s announcement, while Thailand alleges repeated provocations, including the laying of landmines by Cambodian forces.
The ongoing border conflict, rooted in historical disputes and colonial-era border demarcations, has already resulted in significant casualties and displacement of civilians on both sides. Analysts warn that the situation underscores the challenges of maintaining peace even when international figures attempt to mediate. Cambodian officials, while rejecting accusations of violations, have expressed willingness to negotiate and have called for international verification of events leading to the latest escalation.
Observers note that the discord over the alleged ceasefire highlights the volatility of the region and the limitations of external influence in resolving longstanding territorial disputes. With both sides remaining steadfast, the situation on the Thailand-Cambodia border remains tense, with no immediate resolution in sight.
